Presenter: Lori Wong Presentation Topic: Lori’s book: Ellie Awakens the Spirits of Tam Kung Temple and update on the Tam Kung Temple Abstract: Tam Kung Temple Active since the 1880s, the Yen Wo Society, was formally established in1905 by the Chinese Hakka community in Victoria, BC. The Society is the custodian of Tam Kung Temple, responsible for its preservation and maintenance. Tam Kung Temple (1876) initially began as a roadside shrine in the 1860s, and moved to its present location on the fourth floor of the Yen Wo Society Building (1912), located in Victoria Chinatown. The history of Tam Kung Temple is also a narrative about early Chinese migration to Canada. The temple provided a safe space for the Chinese community to practice their traditions, maintain their unique cultural identity, and gather to speak freely about their concerns within the Chinese community. It was a spiritual haven for many individuals who sought solace during the early years of racial discrimination. Designated a National Historic Site of Canada, it is a cultural landmark and has served the local community for over a century. |

Ellie Awakens the Spirits of Tam Kung Temple
To further its outreach and promote cultural awareness, the Yen Wo Society recently published a children’s book, Ellie Awakens the Spirits of Tam Kung Temple, co-written by Lori Wong and Ashton Louie. The children’s book project was funded and supported by the Government of Canada and the Yen Wo Society, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Tam Kung Temple (1876-2026). It is a story of migration, resilience, and community. A story of hope, love, and belonging.

Biography:
Lori Wong is a retired educator (MEd UBC), researcher, temple and family historian based in North Vancouver. She brings a heartfelt connection to her Chinese cultural heritage through her volunteer work with the Yen Wo (Hakka) Society, the custodian of Tam Kung Temple, and her recently published children’s book, Ellie Awakens the Spirits of Tam Kung Temple.
Born and raised in Victoria, BC, Lori grew up with stories and traditions that shaped her appreciation for her family’s contribution to the Chinese-Canadian community. As the great-granddaughter of Ngai Sze, one of the founders of Tam Kung Temple (1876), she honours her family’s legacy by weaving personal memories and historical knowledge into engaging narratives, preserving the lore and history of Tam Kung Temple for future generations.
