Our first event of the fall is on Sunday September 27, 2026 at the Fountain Restaurant.
The presentation is titled "How Forbidden was the Forbidden City? Victoria's Chinatown Reinterpreted" by John Lutz.
This a restaurant is on the corner of Hillside and Blanshard (see map below)
(there is another restaurant with ”fountain” in the title.).
There is free parking in the Fountain’s parking lot but you have to register you spot when you get there. Instructions are posted on the parking lot.

How Forbidden was the Forbidden City? Victoria's Chinatown Reinterpreted.
Abstract:
Using census, directory, and tax information alongside newspapers from the 1870s to 1911 I explore the evolution of Chinatown, who lived and worked there, and how the Chinese residents interacted with wider Victoria society. By using Geographic Information System we can map each resident to their home and the result offers new insights into how Forbidden was the "Forbidden City".
Biography:
John Lutz is a professor of History at the University of Victoria whose research focuses on Indigenous-settler relations and the history of racism in the Pacific Northwest. He is the author of Makúk: A New History of Aboriginal-White Relations, co-editor of the collections Towards a New Ethnohistory: Community Engaged Scholarship Among the People of the River and To Share Not Surrender: Indigenous and Settler Visions of Treaty Making in the Colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia. He has published several articles on the history of race in BC.
