Presenters: Grant Marven - VCCFA Board Member, Geni Tse - VCCFA Board Member, Art Carey - VCCFA Member
Abstract:
In April 2026, Geni Tse, Art Carey, and Grant Marven (all VCCFA members) travelled to Southern China and cruised down the Yangtze River. In this talk we will share our adventures with stories, videos and photos; and we will also share some tips and essential tools used for travelling in China in 2026.
We visited (in chronological order) Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Guilin, Yangshuo, Chongqing, Yichang, and Shanghai. We used high speed trains going over 300 km/hour and we took a gorgeous cruise down the Yangtze River from Chongqing to the Three Gorges Dam in Yichang. Within the cities, we used the metros, Didi (China’s Uber), and took a ride in a driverless taxi. China is living in the future. Everything was digital and almost no paper money was used. It is essential to have a cell phone, a power bank, and several essential applications on your phone. We look forward to sharing our experience with you!
Biographies
Grant Marven. I have been amazed by technology and engineering all my life, from getting my first personal computer in the early 80s, to earning a BSc degree in Computer Science and later an MScin Computer Science, before working in the firmware engineering field for 25+ years. Firmware engineering involves writing computer code for computers on circuit boards. I worked in the audio industry for over 20 years and was the Director of Engineering at a local design center for a Seattle-based company before I retired.
I also have an interest in languages and cultures. I am currently learning Mandarin. I have exchanged English lessons for Mandarin lessons, leading to many Chinese friends. I have adopted a Chinese name (小山 Xiǎoshān, which means "small mountain") to make things easier for my Chinese friends. Currently, I am on the board of the Victoria Canada-China Friendship Association.
