Presentation Topic: A View from Here: Asian Art at the AGGV
Presenter: Dr. Heng Wu, Curator
Since its founding, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria has been dedicated to collecting, studying, and exhibiting
Asian art. Through the extraordinary efforts of generations of curators,
professionals, and generous donors, the AGGV has formed a collection that
spans millennia and encompasses a wide range of artistic traditions across Asia.
In April 2024, the Gallery opened its permanent exhibition A View from
Here: Reimagining the AGGV Collections, which includes a dedicated
gallery space for Asian art. Featuring over three hundred carefully
selected works, the exhibition draws from the Gallery’s extensive Asian
art holdings. Organized by material and medium, the display invites
visitors to rediscover the fundamental enchantment of art—its
materiality—and to appreciate the distinctive qualities embedded in
diverse Asian artistic traditions.

Biography: Dr. Heng Wu is the Curator of Asian Art at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (AGGV), where she oversees
one of Canada’s most significant collections of Asian art. Prior to joining the AGGV, she worked at the Nanjing
Museum, one of China’s leading cultural institutions, specializing in the development of international travelling
exhibitions. She holds a doctoral degree from the University of Bergen, Norway.
Her research interests include museum and society, museum
communication, exhibition storytelling, and the interpretation, presentation, and representation of Asian collections in a global context. She has published extensively in both English and Chinese and
is frequently invited to speak at international conferences and forums. Recent exhibitions she has curated include Beauty of Mending: Kintsugi and Beyond, Crossing: Art, Heritage, and Personal Journeys, and the
permanent gallery of Asian art at the AGGV.
