Abstract:
The term blue-and-white refers to a type of porcelain featuring cobalt blue decoration on a white porcelain body, first manufactured in China. After its debut on the world stage, blue-and-white ceramics ‘went viral,’ inspiring imitation and innovation across the globe. It has remained a global product ever since, appreciated by people around the world.
Looking back on the journey of blue-and-white ceramics, from their origins, to their many variations, what stands out is a global character infused with local influences. The exhibition Global: Blue and White from the AGGV, held at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria from January 2021 to May 2022, explored this dynamic interplay between the global and the local. Centered on a theme with contemporary relevance, the exhibition invited reflection on how global connections and local expressions coexist, interact, and inform one another.
