Presentation Topic:   Chinese Burial Practices & the Harling Point Cemetery

Presenter:  Mr. John Adams

Halloween is the traditional European time for thinking about dead people and ghosts. However, it is important to remember that in China, burial customs and ideas about ghosts stem from another perspective.

John Adams, author of Chinese Victoria, is also a long-time member of the Old Cemeteries Society and has been studying the subjects of death, dying and funerary rituals for many decades. He has prepared an illustrated presentation that starts with the Confucian ideas on these subjects and looks at how they have shaped Chinese cultural beliefs and practices. He will talk about their background in China and how they were adapted by Chinese Canadians in Victoria and elsewhere. Where were Chinese buried here? Were they actually exhumed and shipped back to China? What traditions are linked to Chinese burial customs today? Please come to John’s talk to discover the answers to these questions.
