Topic: “Victoria’s Chinese Market Gardens”

Presenter:  Mr. John Adams

Description:  Many of the earliest migrants from China were from the rural farming areas of Guangdong where rice, oranges and pineapples were staple crops. The young Chinese men who arrived in Victoria in 1858 discovered that there was a demand for fresh produce here. But the crops and growing conditions were quite different from back home. However, they soon adapted to their new environment and started market gardens in plots of arable land wherever water was available in the Greater Victoria area. Market gardens led to greenhouses and to a peddler economy to deliver the vegetables throughout the region. John Adams, author of Chinese Victoria: A Long and Difficult Journey will discuss this often overlooked aspect of Chinese Canadian history, with many illustrations from his book.

Biography:  John Adams is a historian and author based in Victoria. He holds a Master’s degree in Museum Studies from the University of Toronto and has 30 years of experience in historic sites and museums in Ontario, Vancouver, and Victoria. He operates Discover The Past, specializing in historical research, writing, lecturing, and tours. He has authored seven books, including "Chinese Victoria: A Long and Difficult Journey."
